Yes. An ordinary privately used electric Mercedes car in England, Scotland or Wales normally needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, then annually. Battery power does not provide an exemption. Northern Ireland has separate rules, and particular vehicle categories can have different first-test requirements.
The usual private-car timetable applies
Check the first registration date and recorded MOT status. GOV.UK sets out the deadlines. An EQA, EQB, EQE or EQS is not exempt simply because it has no petrol or diesel engine.
As an illustration, an ordinary private electric car registered on 20 October 2023 would normally need its first MOT by 20 October 2026 in Great Britain. That assumes the usual car category, not a taxi or another vehicle with different requirements.
No tailpipe emissions test does not mean no MOT
A battery electric Mercedes has no combustion exhaust emissions to test. The Motor Ombudsman explains this distinction. Brakes, tyres, lights and other applicable safety items remain part of the inspection.
A plug-in hybrid is a different powertrain. Give the station the exact vehicle details and let it apply the current manual. Driving on battery power that morning does not make a hybrid the same as a fully electric vehicle for testing.
Brakes and tyres still need preparation
Regenerative braking changes normal driving but does not replace friction brakes or the parking brake. Report unusual noises, warnings or an uneven response before the test. Energy recovery cannot compensate for a faulty safety system.
Use the specified tyre size, load rating and pressure. Check inner tread and sidewalls after kerb impacts. Weight, tyre type and driving vary, so no universal tyre replacement mileage is reliable for every EQ model.
An MOT does not certify battery capacity
The MOT checks prescribed items rather than providing a complete traction-battery assessment. A pass is not a guarantee of charging speed, remaining range or the health of every drivetrain component.
For a used electric Mercedes, request a separate battery-condition and charging assessment where available. Ask what it measures and under what conditions. The predicted dashboard range varies with weather, recent journeys and climate-control use.
More electric cars are reaching testing age
The UK had 2,017,000 licensed zero-emission cars at the end of June 2026, a 34.0% annual increase, according to DfT’s September 2026 release. This measures the UK fleet, not Mercedes MOT outcomes.
Owners need to plan testing as well as maintenance. A battery warranty or recent workshop service does not remove the legal requirement. Save the MOT due date alongside the service and charging records.
Confirm the appointment and costs
The maximum Class 4 car MOT charge is £54.85; stations can charge less. Ask what the quotation includes and distinguish the test fee from any diagnostic or repair work.
Provide the registration and mention high-voltage or parking-brake warnings in advance. Confirm the station’s arrangements for the exact model. If the car gives a stop instruction, obtain professional assistance rather than driving to a booked test.
A used electric Mercedes needs more than an MOT record
When viewing an electric car that already has a valid MOT, check the service history and charging operation separately. Ask for available battery-condition documentation and clarify whether any battery warranty transfers. The legal roadworthiness test and those ownership questions answer different concerns, so one document should not be presented as evidence for everything.
Check the registration and actual vehicle identity rather than relying on the model badge. Ask about outstanding recalls and obtain evidence that any promised work has been carried out. If charging problems or warning messages are present, seek assessment before purchase. A test pass cannot tell you whether an intermittent charging complaint has been resolved or whether the predicted range will suit your own use.
Prepare the car without working on high-voltage equipment
Check accessible lights, wipers and tyres, and give the station details of any dashboard messages. Leave sufficient battery charge for the appointment and any necessary movement, following the station’s booking instructions. There is no universal percentage that every MOT station requires, so confirm its arrangements rather than applying an invented rule.
Keep damaged charging equipment unused and do not remove battery covers or protective panels in an attempt to prepare for testing. High-voltage systems are not owner-service tasks. If there has been an underside impact or a collision near electrical equipment, mention it before the appointment and ask what assessment is needed. A workshop should decide the safe approach for the particular vehicle rather than an owner probing components.
Plan the renewal date and understand the report
Once the Mercedes has an MOT certificate, track its expiry independently of the next service due date. The two appointments may be close enough to arrange together, but ask whether the booking includes both scopes and what each costs. An oil-free powertrain does not mean that all maintenance is included in the MOT fee.
If the report lists an advisory or minor issue, ask what observation or follow-up is appropriate. If it fails, read the exact defect and severity and follow the station’s advice about repair and lawful use. Arrange recovery where safety is compromised. Keeping the test report with any repair invoice gives the next owner or technician useful context, especially when a tyre, brake or electrical warning has appeared more than once.
Use the registration record to resolve uncertainty
If you are unsure when the first test is due, check the recorded registration and MOT status before choosing an appointment. Imported vehicles and cars used in special categories can need individual clarification, so tell the station about those circumstances. Do not rely solely on the age shown in an advert or the year associated with a model update. The electric powertrain does not settle the category question. Accurate records and a confirmed booking are more useful than assuming that every vehicle carrying an EQ badge has precisely the same testing timetable.

Summary
An electric Mercedes still requires its appropriate MOT. Battery-health assessment and scheduled maintenance remain separate considerations. Check the due date and exact model, then ask about testing arrangements through Godstone Mercedes Ltd’s Mercedes MOT service page.
